Enhancing Quality Rater Guidelines with the Addition of Experience to E-A-T

December 15, 2022

Search engine rankings are increasingly being evaluated based on criteria such as E-A-T (expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness). Now, a new E is being added to E-A-T: experience. The idea is that content should not only demonstrate expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness, but also experience. In other words, content should demonstrate that it was produced with some degree of experience.

For example, if someone is looking for information on how to correctly fill out tax returns, they would want content produced by an expert in the field of accounting. On the other hand, if someone is looking for reviews of a tax preparation software they may be better served by looking at forum discussions from people who have hands-on experience with different services.

In this way developers and creators can better assess their search results and ensure they are providing helpful and relevant information demonstrating expertise (E), authoritativeness (A), trustworthiness (T) as well as experience (E). Google has recently released updated Search Rater Guidelines, which includes the concept of E-E-A-T (Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness). This emphasizes the importance of content that is created to be original and helpful for people. It also explains that helpful information can come in a variety of different formats and from a range of sources. Although this isn't a new concept, it better reflects how people search for information and the diversity of quality information available.

These guidelines are used by Search Raters to help evaluate the performance of their various ranking systems, but they don't directly influence rankings.
